ŽILVINAS KEMPINAS & JUSTĖ JANULYTĖ: SKYCITY, WAVES

In 2019 the GAIDA festival is collaborating with the Lithuanian Museum of Applied Art and Design and presenting a programme of new audio-visual works. Two pieces for this programme were supplied by two international celebrities of contemporary art – creator of visual arts Žilvinas Kempinas who currently resides in New York, and composer Justė Janulytė, who lives and works in Milan. Together, hese two laureates of the Lithuanian National Prize have prepared mutual audio-visual projects SKYCITY and WAVES – GAIDA 2019 shall present world premieres of these works.

In order to bring the pieces to life in the best possible way, a special space shall be constructed at the National Gallery of Art. Through collaboration with architects, audio and video engineers, there appears a symbiosis of music and visuals, which shall offer strong sensory experiences to the viewers.

SKYCITY is a contemplative journey is a digital flow of light and sound, provoking a broad emotional spectrum, ranging from tension and anxiety to meditative peace and dreaminess. There are no signs of strict synchronization of sound and visual; all accents are put on a polyphony consisting of sonic and visual worlds, with unexpected conjunctions between rhythm / tempo and metaphorical implications.

WAVES, according to the authors, is an attempt to return to basic experiences provided by light and sound. The intersecting waves of ligh and sound are creating a multi-layered spectrum, which allows us to experience ourselves and others as different wavelengths: either intertwining or dissolving.
