“The Baltic countries continue to astonish us!” admits foreign press when introducing Giedrė Šlekytė, a Lithuanian conductor of younger generation, who served as the first Kapellmeister of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt Orchestra in 2016–2017. Music critics admire her “preciseness and youthful elegance” as well as “dreaminess and tenderly pulsating energy”. This year Šlekytė makes her Vilnius Festival debut bringing an outstanding assembly of Lithuanian musicians from abroad: residents of the USA, Great Britain and Austria – pianist Andrius Žlabys, singers Lina Dambrauskaitė (soprano), Justina Gringytė (mezzo-soprano) and Raimundas Juzuitis (bass-baritone) as well as Lithuania based Tomas Pavilionis (tenor).

The concert programme features Raminta Šerkšnytė’s oratorio ”Songs of Sunset and Dawn” (commission of the Vilnius Festival 2007), the performing forces of which will involve ”Jauna muzika” Vilnius Municipality Choir (artistic director Vaclovas Augustinas). Moreover, tonight’s audience will discover a new facet of worldwide renowned Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. Tonight he will be presented as a composer of a three-movement Concerto for piano and orchestra composed in 2007.
